About the Gear

AFC/MAVRK gear packages are highly versatile and designed for technical rivers and streams such as the Truckee River. The rod, reel, and line have been matched for maximum performance whether you prefer to fish with WF (floating) line, or a light Euro nymph line.

All packages can fish both methods by changing out to the other line. Extra reel spools are available if you want both Euro nymph and WF (floating) line.

If this is your first rod and reel kit, we’ll walk you through the setup, teach you how to fish with your new gear, and offer care and maintenance tips to ensure it stays in top condition.

Gear FAQs

What’s the difference between the WF line and ESN line?

The WF line is a classic weight-forward floating fly line. Its added weight helps load the rod, making it easier to cast and deliver both the fly line and the fly with precision and distance.

The ESN line is an ultra-light Euro nymph fly line, designed specifically for tightline fishing. By keeping the line elevated off the water, it helps eliminate drag caused by traditional floating lines, giving you better control and more precise presentations.

What gear package is best for me?

Most anglers start with a floating line combo. The weighted line makes casting easier by loading the rod. Our floating line package includes an ESN rod, so you can easily switch to tightline fishing later by just swapping out the line. Or, for convenience, grab an extra Enduro reel spool with ESN line attached and have both lines ready to go.

If you already have a standard floating line setup, the ESN package would be the better option for expanding your skills.

Can the same reel be used for both floating line and ESN line?

In most cases, yes. Any fly reel that can hold thicker floating line can also accommodate thinner ESN line with the addition of more backing. However, some dedicated ESN reels have limited spool capacity and may not fit floating line. Our Enduro reels are designed to handle both types of lines.

Can the same rod be used for both floating line and ESN line?

A 10' 3 wt ESN rod excels with both floating and light ESN lines. In contrast, a shorter 9' 5 wt rod, designed for floating lines, doesn’t perform as well with lighter ESN lines used in tightline techniques. For optimal performance with both types of lines, we recommend using longer ESN rods.

Which reel size is best?

Larger arbor reels retrieve line more quickly, but smaller, compact reels are lighter and offer better rod action and sensitivity. They also reduce rotational inertia, leading to improved rod performance and handling. For trout fishing, smaller reels are often the better choice.

What is different about an ESN rod?

  1. Versatility: The soft tip of an ESN rod, with its fast action, is ideal for casting small, weighted nymph flies while protecting the lightweight tippet.

  2. Extended Reach: The extra length of the rod enhances your ability to lift and manage the line for better dead-drifts.

  3. Stiffer Mid and Butt Sections: ESN rods are longer and faster action which require the mid and butt sections to be stiffer and thus more powerful than its traditional counterpart of the same weight classification.

How are Mavrk packages different from combo kits at the Big Box stores?

Big brand kits are designed to get you started at an entry-level price point. Mavrk kits, however, offer higher quality and better performance right from the start.

Mavrk rods use premium Toray Japanese Carbon Fiber, AAAA grade cork, and CNC machined reel seat components. *Cheaper rods used low modulus carbon fiber, lower grade cork etc.

Mavrk Reels are tight tolerance CNC machined from billet aluminum, anodized, and have an ultra smooth drag system.

Big Box entry level reels are usually die cast and painted.

Line used on price point gear is the biggest downfall. It retains coils making it difficult to cast and handle.

Mavrk Braided lines are made to our specifications using a premium braided core that shoots laser straight and won’t retain coils. Line size is perfectly matched to each MAVRK rod.

Will premium gear help me catch more fish?

In the beginning, you might not notice. But as your skills improve, you'll come to value a smooth, precision reel, a light and responsive rod, and a perfectly matched fly line that shoots laser straight.

That said, it’s far more important to invest in a guide who can teach you how to catch fish, regardless of your gear quality. If you're on a budget, start with a basic combo, knowing you'll upgrade as your skills improve.
